Congrats! You have made it to the last day of the SEO Challenge! Today we’re going to be wrapping things up.
About The SEO Challenge
The SEO Challenge was designed to give beginners a crash-course into building their SEO strategy. If you’re watching this video, hopefully you’ve already watched the previous four videos and have a stronger knowledge of SEO than when you first started. If you missed a video, or aren’t clear on something, by all means feel free to go back and rewatch. You can also check out the written transcript for each day’s lesson on my website if you just need the Spark Notes version!
Before we get started, I want to ask you a question:
What could you do with 100s or even 1000s of new users coming to your website each and every month?
What would this allow you to do with your business?
With your personal life?
Take a minute to think about it. There’s no rush here on my end. You can even pause this video and come back to me when you’re ready.
Got it? Okay, keep that answer in your mind, and let’s move on.
SEO magic, or just hard work?
A lot of small business owners and other clients I work with view SEO as something that basically only a magician can do.
They assume they can hire an SEO professional and then, with just a snap of their fingers, ta-da!, their website is going to start showing “at the top of Google” for the rest of all eternity.
Unfortunately, getting “to the top of Google” isn’t so simple (and sometimes, it may not even be POSSIBLE, depending on what industry and keyword we’re talking about). It involves hard work to get there, as well as ongoing work to make sure you stay there.
And that, in my opinion, is one of the best things about SEO.
SEO doesn’t favor hacky people who are trying to find shortcuts to a strong, popular website.
SEO favors those who are willing to dig in and get their hands a little dirty. It rewards people who put the time in to develop a smart strategy. If you follow through with your strategy and create thorough, well-written content that helps people, SEO will treat you well.
Be cautious of SEO snake oil salesmen
This is true for most industries, but it seems particularly common in the world of SEO.
I can’t tell you the number of spam emails I have received. Some will try to put a little worry in you by claiming your website isn’t showing up in search engines, like this one:
Others will be more direct, promising “guaranteed results”:
Guess what? 99.9% of the time, these are scammy people just trying to get website and business owners who don’t know any better to fall for their tricks. These are the types of “SEO professionals” (and I’d use that term very, very loosely) who usually engage in bad SEO tactics, like keyword stuffing, link building schemes, and other techniques that could actually get you penalized in search results rather than better found!
Be cautious of any one making grand promises, especially about guaranteed ranking or search engine placement by a certain date. As you’ve learned by now from this challenge — SEO is like a snowball rolling down a hill. It takes time to see results. Also, no one understands exactly how Google works or what algorithm they use….so how can one offer “guaranteed results”?
You totally are capable of doing SEO work on your own
There are lots of legit SEO agencies and professionals out there, and hey – if you have the budget to hire them, go for it! But for most lifestyle brands, small business owners, coaches, photographers — you know, people like us! — I generally recommend taking a DIY approach to SEO.
Why? Well, besides the whole saving-money thing, when it comes down to it, optimizing your website for search is pretty straightforward. It involves some technical things, sure, but the main thing, really, is just understanding what people are looking for, knowing what your competitors are doing, and then creating a smart content strategy.
No one knows your business better than you do, so once you have learned about how to create a solid SEO foundation, you are the BEST person to drive that strategy forward.
This 5 day SEO Challenge was intended to get you started on your SEO journey, but that journey doesn’t need to end today!
I know we’re all busy people, but making room in your schedule for some SEO education is something that is going to pay off.
If you plan on creating content without knowing the techniques that will help get your website found by search engines, you’re pretty much just leaving opportunity on the table.
If you remember back to Day 1 of the challenge, I introduced you to Website A. It’s been a while, so here’s a refresher:
- Website A launched in June 2019. They optimized their content for search and they were rewarded with an average organic search growth rate of 66% in their first 9 months.
Now, let me introduce you to another website: Website B.
Website B is another real life website I’ve had the pleasure of working on. Both Website A and Website B launched at about the same time, give or take a couple of months, and both publish content on similar topics. Website B actually has double the amount of content that Website A has.
However, Website B did not do any search engine optimization…and it shows.
These stats show that while Website A was able to pull in over 2000 users from search engines during the month, Website B is barely getting 100 users from search. Even though Website B has twice the content!
Unfortunately, because Website B did no foundational SEO work, they wasted a lot of time creating content that just isn’t going to get picked up by search engines. Most of it is too short — and we learned about the importance of long-form content in Day 4’s lesson — and some of the longer articles are written on topics that have a very low search volume.
Overall, it’s a major bummer for Website B. But, it doesn’t have to be that way for you!
How To Learn More SEO Techniques
While we’ve covered lots of SEO basics in this 5 day challenge, we’ve gone over most of these topics quite quickly. If you’re interested in expanding upon what you’ve learned this far, let me introduce you to the SEO & Grow! virtual training course.
SEO & Grow! consists of about 4 hours of video-based training content. It’s very similar to this challenge, actually, except we break everything down on a more individual basis.
The course is split into 3 main sections: technical, content, and marketing. These components make up what I like to refer to as the “SEO Burger” (I’m fun like that).
We then break down each component into short, easy to digest lessons. For example:
The technical module contains lessons on:
- How to self assess your current SEO situation
- Domain authority
- Google Analytics
- Google Console
Platform-Specific SEO Training
Then, on top of that, the course also has platform-specific modules that address how to do things specifically for the platform you are using. There is about 45 minutes of video content for Squarespace, and 45 minutes of video content for WordPress.
Course Outline – ≈ 45 minutes of WordPress content
Course Outline – ≈ 45 minutes of Squarespace content
I know these platforms can be a bit overwhelming and intimidating at times. But I want you to feel empowered with whatever platform you’re using, not afraid of it!
There’s also some additional bonus content and supplemental materials to make your life easier.
And the best part? It’s all self-led and you have lifetime access, so you can whiz through the course at the speed of light OR you can take your sweet time with it. Whatever your learning style is, the course is there for you!
Hungry For More?
If you liked the style of this challenge AND you are hungry for more, definitely check out furthering your website’s presence with the SEO & Grow! virtual training course.
If you apply what you learn in the course to your website, it is totally possible for you to start seeing hundreds, if not thousands, of people pouring into your website from search engines each and every month (just like Website A)! And that’s not an outlandish promise — it’s just a fact!
So, at the beginning of this video when I asked you what you could do with large amounts of new traffic coming to your website, what was your answer?
Whatever it is, is it WORTH putting in a little time and effort to achieve?
If your answer is yes — then I think the SEO & Grow! course may just be right for you!
And that’s a wrap, folks!
Thank you so, so much for joining me on this 5 day learning journey. I hope you learned a lot and have even started to apply it to your website, too!
